Educational Resources

ITGLWF & Education

Education Senegal           Class Room

One of the main ways that the ITGLWF assists unions in developing countries is through an extensive programme of education and development projects. The assistance given is based on these ideas :

  • That the projects entered into are geared to campaigning and expanding the membership base of unions
  • That union educational activities should be linked to strengthening unions and fighting for improvements at work and in the community
  • The empowerment of trade unions through the achievement of self-reliance
  • The promotion of equal opportunities for women in trade union education programmes and special provision where this is needed
  • The overall aim of trade union education is the growth and development of strong, independent, self-reliant and democratic organisations in which members play an active role through improved skills and greater awareness of the issues facing them
  • The need to build an international trade union movement, which is based on solidarity, equality and democratic participation

The ITGLWF raises funds from the international trade union movement to organise educational and development programmes to meet clearly defined and assessed needs. Together with its partner organisations these projects are planned, implemented and evaluated. The ITGLWF strives to ensure that the best use is made of these scarce resources.

We hope that the materials below will provide some useful guidance and ideas for educators and activists in the textile and clothing industries around the world.

"Campaigning For A Living Wage"

Following the recent guide 'Bargaining for a Living Wage', the ITGLWF has assembled a set of educational materials to assist in campaign work with members on the issue of a living wage.

ITGLWF Campaigning for a living wage The Materials are targeted specifically at Trade Unionists and workers in the countries of South and East Asia, and have been produced in as many of the major languages of these countries as is practical.

They are intended to enhance our understanding of the concept "living wage" and to equip us better to participate in, or lead, a national campaign.

The materials are organised in the following units:

Introduction from Neil Kearney, General Secretary of the ITGLWF

Unit 1: Background to the Industry

Unit 2: A view from a buying country

Unit 3: How can we live on this?

Unit 4: Determining a Living Wage

Unit 5: Running a Campaign

Each unit is self contained and they can be used in any order. The materials are intended for trade union members with little prior knowledge of the issues.

Each unit, apart from the Introduction, consists of a video clip, a set of slides and activities. You may wish to use the video as an introduction to the session before running a small group exercise activity using the activities provided. The slides are for use in the preliminary discussion. However, the materials are designed to be used flexibly and modified to suit your purposes.

"Women in the Global Economy"

To obtain a copy of this publication, please contact the ITGLWF Secretariat or download the pdf version here or by clicking on the image.

The majority of workers in our sectors are women, and there can be no real trade union democracy without full and equal participation of women at all levels of the trade union movement.

Women workers are the key to the future of the trade union movement. But winning their active support requires that unions broaden their perspectives and look at new ways of organising and taking collective action.

This handbook starts by looking at the position of women in the global economy. It explores the international production process and explains how the global market has exploited the vulnerable position of women in industry and undermined their working conditions.

It then looks at how unions should be responding, by organising women into trade unions; by safeguarding their interests through effective collective bargaining and campaigning on issues that matter to women; and by adopting trade union structures which ensure the full integration of women at all levels.

Thirdly, it looks at international instruments that unions can use to improve the rights of women, including international standards, corporate codes of conduct, and the UN’s Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

Finally, it covers some key areas on which unions should be bargaining and campaigning, including equality of opportunity and treatment, maternity protection, sexual harassment, and protecting the rights of homeworkers.

This handbook is designed for use in training workshops. It can also be used as a guide for women’s committee or the trade union Executive to provide guidance on making unions relevant to women.
