A brief glance at this website provides a disturbing picture of the exploitation suffered by workers producing textiles, clothing and footwear in every part of the world.
Child labour, long working hours for starvation wages, appalling health and safety conditions, discrimination and physical abuse are common in factories in every continent. And, if anything, conditions are getting worse as globalisation and trade liberalisation in the sector spurs cut-throat competition based on cutting labour costs.
In the past year alone, hundreds of workers have perished in fires or other accidents in factories. Thousands more have been seriously injured. And those who object to or resist this exploitation are frequently fired or face harassment, intimidation and worse.
The ITGLWF exists to help workers in the industry exercise their right to organise into representative trade unions and to negotiate collectively with their employers - the only sustainable way of securing decent work.
Every year we publicise the impact of exploitation on workers and their families and we make representations to employers, to brands ad retailers, to governments and to the international agencies in the battle for justice for workers in the sectors. Every year, our efforts reach millions of workers in 120 countries worldwide. And not without success! As the industry relocates to low cost production centres, the resources available for this work diminish while the demand for intervention and supportive action grows.
That's why the ITGLWF welcomes financial support from those who consider our efforts worthwhile. your contribution will make a difference in helping us achieving our objective of decent work for every workers in the industry. You can make a contribution by contacting our office based in Brussels:
