ITGLWF Mourns the Loss of Honduran Trade Union Leader Israel Salinas
The ITGLWF is mourning the loss of Israel Salinas, General Secretary of the ITGLWF affiliate, the Federation of Honduran Workers (FITH) and General Secretary of the national centre CUTH.
Israel died on 14 February in a plane crash while travelling from the industrial town of San Pedro Sula, centre of the country’s apparel industry, to the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa. The tragic accident took place at around eight in the morning when the plane crashed due to poor visibility and strong winds.
A nationally and internationally recognised trade union leader, Israel was known for his unrelenting fight for a just and inclusive society and for respect for human and trade union rights in the region. As General Secretary of both the FITH and the national centre CUTH he fought tirelessly to improve the pay and conditions of garment workers, many of whom are employed in Free Trade Zones. He was also a prominent member of the Popular Resistance Front against the military coup that overthrew Manuel Zelaya in June 2008.
The ITGLWF has expressed its solidarity with the FITH and the CUTH in the face of this tragic loss and has conveyed its condolences to Israel’s family.
