Bangladesh Government Urged to Release Funds for Spectrum Compensation
On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the tragic Spectrum factory disaster the International Textile Garment and Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF) and its affiliates in the country have urged the government of Bangladesh to permit the release of funds earmarked for the victims of the disaster and the families of the deceased.
Since the collapse of the Spectrum factory collapsed on April 11 2005, which left 64 workers dead and eighty injured, the Spanish multinational Inditex SA, along with the ITGLWF and its affiliates in the country, have been working to develop and implement a relief scheme to provide the beneficiaries of the scheme with a monthly income.
However, due to bank regulations the funds needed to bring the monthly payments up to date are currently frozen in a local Inditex account in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been asked to authorise the swift release of the funds
